Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy wasn’t joking when she told Total Film magazine last month that “Star Wars” will need “to create a whole new saga” in order to return to the big screen and not just rely on threads from the past. That’s exactly what Taika Waititi wants to do with his upcoming “Star Wars” movie, which will be the franchise’s first movie since the Skywalker saga came to a controversial end with “The Rise of Skywalker.”
Waititi recently told Total Film that he’s not interested in making a movie with pre-existing characters and story threads or telling origin stories (think Ron Howard’s polarizing Han Solo prequel “Solo”). The “Thor: Love and Thunder” director aims to “create some new characters” and “expand the world” of “Star Wars” with his movie.

Box Office: Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ Looks to Blast Off With 70 Million Opening Weekend
- 15 June 2022
- Variety - Film News
Disney’s “Lightyear,” an origin story about the Star Command’s most famous space ranger, is looking to take the box office to infinity and beyond. But first, it’ll have to thwart some rogue dinosaurs and a few fighter jets.
The “Toy Story” spinoff is expected to launch to 70 million to 80 million from 4,200 North American theaters, which should be enough to claim the No. 1 spot. However, “Lightyear” will face steep competition from last weekend’s champion, Universal’s “Jurassic World Dominion,” which debuted to 145 million, as well as Paramount’s crowd-pleasing blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick,” which has continued to defy the forces of gravity at the box office.
In its sophomore outing, “Jurassic World Dominion” is likely to decline 55-60 between Friday and Sunday, which would put ticket sales around 58 million to 65 million. Overall, it’ll be another robust weekend at the domestic box office as “Top Gun: MaverickSee full article at Variety - Film News »

‘Love, Victor’ Showrunner Says Moving Queer Show to Disney+ Is ‘Especially Meaningful’ — Q&a
- 15 June 2022
- Indiewire
From its very first episode, Hulu’s “Love, Victor” feels like a hug.
Created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who adapted “Love, Simon” for the big screen, the series expands upon the film with a young, closeted student at Creekwood High School: Victor Salazar (Michael Cimino).
As with “Love, Simon,” “Love, Victor” is heartfelt and humorous — an extension of Becky Albertalli’s original novel and an opportunity for Aptaker and Berger to tell more queer stories with the help of executive producer Brian Tanen.
“We love our teen drama and we wanted to have lots of exciting things happening to these kids,” says Tanen, who executive produced “Atypical” and cut his teeth writing and story editing credits on “Ugly Betty,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Desperate Housewives.” “Sometimes that meant sad things and real emotional problems that real teenagers grapple with, but we always wanted to balance that with wish fulfillment,See full article at Indiewire »
Christian Bale Never Tried To Make His American Psycho Character Cool
- 15 June 2022
- Slash Film
For a guy who played Batman in some of the biggest superhero movies of all time, it's telling that Christian Bale's most identifiable role is still Patrick Bateman, the wealthy Wall Street serial killer of director Mary Harron's "American Psycho," a man perpetually trapped in the vanity-obsessed 1980s as well as in his own diseased mind.
Based on the character in Bret Easton Ellis' novel of the same name, Patrick Bateman is a role that would've been a calling card for just about any actor: He's sardonic, oddly self-aware, impeccably dressed, suave, charming, and utterly insane. Yet where other actors would likely have approached the...

Every Season Of Dexter Ranked Worst To Best
- 15 June 2022
- Slash Film
Showtime's "Dexter" made a name for itself by combining police procedurals and America's obsession with true crime. Adapted from Jeff Lindsay's novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter," the scripted drama featured a new kind of monster, the psychopath with a heart of gold. Dexter Morgan is a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department by day and a serial killer by night. Governed by a strict ethical code created by his adopted father Harry, Dexter (mostly) only kills other murderers intending to close the gaps left by a fallible legal system. The show's success is largely due to the stellar performance of Michael C. Hall, who manages...

Sci-Fi Movie Deaths No One Saw Coming
- 15 June 2022
- Slash Film
- Death may be inevitable, but in a movie, it can come as one hell of a surprise. It's often the moment in which the story turns on a dime, changing its emotional tenor or throwing what we thought we understood into disarray. In science fiction, it's also an easy way of upping the stakes and making sure we understand that no one's safe. That doesn't mean it always works the way the creators intended.
A well-delivered shock to the plot can uplift the entire movie, using our broken comfort zone to focus us on the remaining cast and their actions and turning the rest of the film into a...

What’s better than Roald Dahl‘s 1988 novel “Matilda,” about a young girl with psychokinetic powers who uses them to transcend her life’s crappy circumstances?

For some, it might be Danny Devito‘s 1996 adaptation of the Dahl book, beloved by those the age of this writer. For others, it could end up being “Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical,’ a new adaptation based on the Tony and Oliver award-winning play.
